‘SNL Weekend Update’ mocks NYC earthquake, Trump’s ‘cocaine’ comment

This weekend’s episode of “Saturday Night Live,” took aim at the reactions to New York City’s earthquake, while also poking fun at former President Trump’s recent suggestion that President Biden is on cocaine.

SNL’s “Weekend Update” segment on Saturday night kicked off with a discussion about the 4.8 magnitude earthquake that shook the New York City area last Friday. Multiple aftershocks occurred throughout the day, followed by a flurry of social media memes mocking the literal and figurative “shock” felt by those in the tri-state area.

“Well, yesterday everyone in New York pretended they felt an earthquake,” co-host Colin Jost quipped. “Just admit it, you thought it was wind. This earthquake was actually the best possible disaster. It was kind of like the time I saw my dad in the shower. It was a little scary, there was no permanent damage but I’m going to remember it for the rest of my life.”

Jost then switched the subject to Trump’s remark at a campaign rally that he would debate Biden “any time and any place,” before pointing to an empty podium next to him on stage.

“And now, Trump and Biden are both polling at points behind the podium,” Jost said, in a nod to recent polling that suggests Americans feel negatively about a rematch between Biden and Trump.

“In a new interview, Donald Trump also claimed that President Biden was high on cocaine during the State of the Union, saying he ‘was all jacked up at the beginning. By the end, he was fading fast,’” Jost continued. “Huh, it almost sounds like Donald Trump knows exactly what it feels like.”

“You know, like at the beginning, you’ve got a lot of energy, but then by the end, you’re fading fast,” Jost added.

A video was played of Trump at a rally dancing, before another clip of an apparent gaffe from the former president at a rally.

Last week, Trump suggested Biden might have been on performance-enhancing drugs, and called for Biden to be drug-tested if he chooses to debate Trump this election cycle, according to MSNBC.

Co-host Michael Che later targeted Trump’s recent pledge to make Election Day “Christian Visibility Day” after the White House issued a proclamation recognizing Transgender Day of Visibility as it coincided with Easter.

“Donald Trump said at a rally that he would make November 5 Christian visibility day…wait I thought that was called Ash Wednesday?” Che joked, prompting laughter from the studio audience.

Jost also referenced Trump’s comparison of himself to Nelson Mandela. The former president, in a Truth Social post Saturday, said it would be a “great honor” to be jailed for violating a gag order in his hush money trial and said he will “gladly become a modern day Nelson Mandela.”

Jost quipped Trump will do this “unfortunately for Halloween,” and showed a photoshopped picture of the former president and Mandela morphed together.
