NJ imam shot outside mosque in Newark


An imam was shot in front of his Newark, N.J., mosque early Wednesday, local police confirmed.

The shooting occurred around 6:15 a.m. outside the Masjid Muhammad mosque, just after the 6 a.m. morning prayer.

The imam was taken to a local hospital, where he is in critical condition, the Newark Department of Public Safety confirmed.

The New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations released a statement calling on the community for help.

“We are deeply concerned about this incident and pray for the speedy recovery of the imam.” spokesperson Dina Sayedahmed said. “Anyone with information about the shooting should immediately contact local police.”

Information on a suspect or motive was not released.
