Margot Robbie Proved Method Dressing Is Here to Stay With ‘Barbie’

It was a banner year for the color pink if Margot Robbie had anything to say about it. Even before Greta Gerwig’s Barbie film hit theaters this past July, people were already getting into the spirit, planning outfits and parties in celebration. And nobody was more on-theme than Robbie herself, whose litany of Barbie-inspired press tour looks rivaled the film’s impressive wardrobe full of, among other things, Chanel costumes.

Robbie, with the help of stylist Andrew Mukamel, produced hit after hit. In some cases, she went literal, leaning hard into the increasingly popular method dressing phenomenon. For the film’s London premiere, she transformed into the 1960 “Enchanted Evening” Barbie in Vivienne Westwood couture; for the Seoul premiere, she did double duty as “Day to Night” Barbie, changing from a spectacularly ‘80s power suit into a full-skirted Versace. While she ditched the pink at the Los Angeles premiere, Robbie’s black sparkly strapless dress with an ankle-length mermaid flair was custom made by Schiaparelli to replicate the “Solo in the Spotlight” Barbie.

Much to the pleasure of fashion fans, the press tour was also rife with deep cuts. In one instance, she wore a Barbiesque vintage Versace turtleneck and skirt from the brand’s famous spring 1994 collection—originally worn on the runway by Kate Moss. The brand also recreated a spring 1993 polka-dot dress (in hot pink of course), originally modeled by Karen Mulder. Even travel days were chic: Robbie arrived in Sydney wearing an archival Chanel blazer originally seen in 1995 on Claudia Schiffer.

And if you thought Barbie was behind us, then think again. Robbie attended November’s Gotham Awards dressed as “Black Magic” Barbie—if Barbie wore custom Prada, that is. With awards season still ahead of us, we can only imagine that Robbie and Mukamel have some tricks up their sleeves.

Below, check out some of Margot Robbie’s best Barbie looks…so far.
