I Used to Hate Wearing Shorts, but This Flowy, Under-$50 Pair From Athleta Is My New Summer Travel Staple
They’re perfect for running, hiking, and sightseeing.

Every year as the weather gets warmer, I’m faced with the same unfortunate truth: I still hate wearing shorts. I turn to tight biker shorts when working out and stiff denim for running errands during the spring and summer months, sure, but I always notice that when it comes time to pack up my suitcase for my travels, I hesitate to add shorts to my bag. Until recently, that is.
Earlier this month, I was given the opportunity to test out Athleta’s new collection of breathable and movement-friendly running gear, and while the entire range of apparel was incredibly well made and flattering, it was the Weekender Mid Rise Run Shorts that blew me out of the water — and changed my mind about shorts. At just $49, I won’t soon be spotted traveling without them.

These flattering, lightweight, and comfortable shorts may have been designed for running, but I suspect they’re about to become a new vacation favorite of mine thanks to the impressive freedom of movement they provide. Made from a recycled blend of polyester and spandex, these shorts feel buttery soft and cool against my skin, making them ideal for travel days in the summer when I don’t want to worry about sweating through a pair of leggings while still being ready to take on the day. They even come in sizes ranging from XXS to 3X, making it easier than ever to find a perfect fit, and they sit at a length that’s not too short nor too long (a feature that’s notoriously difficult to come by).
A gathered elastic waistband is one of my favorite highlights of these shorts since I found that they never dig into my skin whether I’m running or wearing them to lounge around my house. This is a relief because they’re about to become my first choice for long flights as well. The mid-rise fit makes me feel confident and stylish, and they’re designed to be sweat-wicking, which is key for the summer months. Plus, they’re thoughtfully designed with a hidden pocket in the waistband which is the perfect place to store my cards and keys, alongside a built-in lining so I don’t have to worry about the gorgeous white material appearing see-through. And they’re so lightweight that they’ll be easy to tuck into my carry-on or hiking pack as a spare change of clothes while I’m on the go.

I can’t get enough of these shorts, and after their release earlier this month, neither can Athleta shoppers, with the Weekender Mid Rise Run Shorts already earning rave reviews. One customer confirmed that they provide “great coverage” which can be difficult to find with flowy shorts, while still remaining “so comfortable.” Another shopper spoke to the versatility of the shorts by explaining that they’re “great for running and errands,” adding that “the front pockets are great for errands and everyday wear,” while the fit is “very flattering.”
No matter what you have planned during your travels, you can rest assured that these shorts will give you the freedom to do it all. In fact, another shopper opined that they’re “so comfortable for both my intense workouts or just day-to-day wear.” Best of all, they don’t ride up, so from running to racking up miles during a walking tour, you can rest assured that chafing will be the last of your worries.

As a reformed shorts hater, I have to credit the new Weekender Mid Rise Run Shorts for providing a lightweight, breathable, and comfortable option to wear during workouts and sightseeing excursions throughout the warmer months. At $49 at Athleta, they’re worth every penny, and with six colors and patterns to choose from, I might just have to pick up a few more pairs ahead of my hiking trips this summer.
