A house in a rural part of Michigan exploded Saturday, killing four people and sending two others to the hospital, according to local authorities.
The explosion occurred Saturday afternoon in Whitmore Lake, Mich., near Northfield Township, about 8 miles from Ann Arbor, sending debris across 2 acres of the property, Lt. David Powell of the Northfield Township Police Department said in a statement.
Officers were called to the home for an unknown explosion, where they discovered the residence “completely destroyed,” according to Powell. Three bodies were found at the scene, while three other residents were taken to the hospital.
One of the three residents later died due to injures, while the two other residents are still hospitalized, Powell said Sunday.
Investigation by local police and fire departments found six people were home at the time of the explosion. An investigation into the cause of the explosion is ongoing and will likely span several days, Powell added.
“We don’t know,” Powell told reporters, per CBS News. “Maybe some type of gas explosion? Our officers got a call that someone found debris on the other side of 23-mile with some paperwork on it, and it was debris from the house explosion.”
DTE Energy, a natural gas company, was called to evaluate the scene, along with various police and fire departments and hazmat crews, CBS News reported.
The names of those killed in the explosion have not been released.
