Flights on This New Airline for Dogs — with $8,000 Tickets — Are Selling Out

Air travel is now going to the dogs — but in style.

Bark Air, a new airline designed completely for pups, recently made its inaugural flight from New York to Los Angeles.

The service currently operates limited routes servicing New York, Los Angeles, Paris, and London. The airline is encouraging people to suggest future routes through an online form. A one-way ticket from New York to Los Angeles costs $6,000 and a one-way ticket from New York to London costs $8,000. From New York, the airline operates out of a private airport in Westchester County, and flies to the Van Nuys airport outside of Los Angeles.

“We are excited to take the insights we’ve learned over the years to create an experience that is truly dog-first, which is drastically different from just accepting dogs – from the ground to the skies,” Bark’s CEO Matt Meeker said in a statement.

Tickets are sold directly on the BARK Air website.

The airline was created by the Bark company, which makes the popular Bark Box subscription for dogs. The company has since branched off to include dental products, food, accessories, and now the airline.

The company also confirmed to Travel + Leisure that nearly half of June flights from New York to LA are already sold out. When booking, passengers are instructed to include information about the dog just like a regular passenger such as Name, Breed, Size, Age, and Weight.

The flight has special amenities just for dogs, such as a concierge who welcomes the dogs onto the plane before departure to assist them with a flight prep time to acclimate on the aircraft with special scents, music, and colors.

During the departure, the dogs are provided special beverages so that their ears can acclimate properly to the altitude, according to the company. Throughout the flight, passengers are treated to surprises and snacks.

Traveling with a pet can require extra preparation, and experts recommend making sure your pet is up-to-date on vaccinations, and make sure they are properly tagged or microchipped.
