Civil lawsuit against former Texas Tech basketball player Pop Isaacs dismissed

The civil lawsuit against now-former Texas Tech basketball player Richard “Pop” Isaacs was dismissed in Lubbock’s 237rd District Court on Tuesday.

The motion to dismiss the suit was filed by the plaintiffs John and Jane Doe, the parents of the alleged victim, a minor child who has been referred to as Janie Doe in legal proceedings. The Does were suing Isaacs for allegedly sexually assaulting Janie while Isaacs and the Red Raiders were competing in the Bahamas last November.

Zeke Fortenberry, attorney for the Does, filed the motion to dismiss around 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to the dismissal document, which was obtained by the Avalanche-Journal. Les Hatch, the presiding judge in the case, signed off on the motion later that day.

Isaacs’ attorneys, Tray Payne and Matt Powell, released a statement Wednesday saying, “The parties to the lawsuit and Title IX complaint have agreed to dismiss all claims that have, or could have been, alleged as against one another.”

The statement also says Isaacs “loved his time in Lubbock and being part of the Red Raider family.” Isaacs entered his name into the transfer portal earlier this month and is unlikely to return to the Red Raider basketball team.

Isaacs thanked Texas Tech fans through social media last week for their support during his time in Lubbock.

The dismissal comes after a hearing over the use of pseudonyms in the lawsuit during which Isaac’s attorney, David Kerby, suggested the possibility of filing a separate defamation case using the girl’s parents identities.
