Bella Hadid’s Cannes Pap Shots Should Be a Perfume Ad

Bella Hadid might have spent the past few months participating in several spit and sawdust rodeos, but it is the super-yacht glamour of Cannes Film Festival that is perhaps this supermodel’s spiritual home. That is because Hadid’s bone structure seems to have been carved to the precise proportions of Carla Bruni’s, but it is also because she has worn this, this and this on the Croisette, as if plunged in the amber of Monica Bellucci’s Hollywood.

And though Hadid has yet to appear at a single premiere or screening–the primary purpose of the festival is, for some people, to merely be seen–photos of the model draped across yachts and strutting through hotel lobbies have proven significantly more stirring than any of this year’s red-carpet photos. For Hadid, there have been spaghetti-strapped minidresses and Prada kitten heels, knotted white shirts and slim-cut cigarette pants, minuscule bikinis and fast-melting ice lollies: each image hanging on the effortless architecture of a sun-soaked perfume ad.

Consider the treatment for the paparazzi shot above, wherein Hadid reclines on a small boat moored along the coast of the French Riviera. A sea breeze blows, she throws her head backwards in casual ecstasy and a scant dress travels up her thighs. (You can almost hear Charles Trenet’s “La Mer” sounding from the distance.) The whole thing is nothing if not an uncanny evocation of the adverts Dolce & Gabbana used to produce for its Light Blue fragrance–those which led David Gandy into budgie smugglers and a Capri cove–and it is a photograph that rivals Orebella’s entire marketing roll out.
