Heathrow has returned to profit for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic, and forecast that a record number of passengers will use the airport this year.

The owners of the UK hub airport reported an adjusted pre-tax profit of £38mn for 2023 compared with a loss of £684mn a year earlier.

Heathrow has been slower to return to profit than many airlines because of the high cost of servicing its debt, and has criticised the UK aviation regulator for not allowing it to raise its landing fees further to improve its finances.

But it forecast a record 81.4mn passengers would travel through it this year, up from 79.2mn in 2023.
