These Are Chicago’s Michelin-Starred Restaurants, 2023

The Michelin Guide announced on Tuesday, November 7, which restaurants in Chicago received coveted Michelin stars this year. The awards were doled out at a shared ceremony in New York City for restaurants from Chicago, New York, and Washington D.C.

The New American restaurant Smyth received its third Michelin star, six years after receiving its second in 2017. It joins Alinea as the only other restaurant in the city to receive Michelin’s highest star rating. No new Chicago restaurants received the two-star distinction. Atelier and Indienne, one of Bon Appétit’s Best New Restaurants of 2023, each received one Michelin star, bringing the number of one-starred restaurants in Chicago up to 18.

Michelin added five new Chicago restaurants to its Bibs Gourmand list this year—an honor recognizing more affordable, often less formal restaurants. The list features Filipino restaurant Boonie’s in the North Center neighborhood—the first Filipino Bib in the city and just the fourth in the country—along with Logan Square’s Cellar Door Provisions (which Bon Appétit described as “the perfect restaurant” way back in 2019). Yao Yao also received a Bib, becoming the city’s first Sichuan and second Chinese restaurant to receive the honor. Pompette in Wicker Park and Union in the next-door neighborhood of Logan Square also received bibs.

Michelin also awards a series of special awards that are separate from the stars and Bibs. The award for Outstanding Service went to Josh Perlman’s restaurant, Giant. The New American restaurant Elske received the award for Exceptional Cocktails, while the Chicago Sommelier award went to Alex Ring of Sepia. An award for outstanding young chefs went to Atelier’s Christian Hunter, and a Green Star—for sustainability in cooking and hospitality—went to Daisies.

Last year, four Chicago restaurants received stars for the first time, one of which has since closed. The remaining three—Kasama, Esmé, and Galit—all received a single star. Of last year’s honorees, Kasama (featured in the second season of FX’s The Bear) made headlines in particular for becoming the world’s first Filipino restaurant to receive a Michelin star.

If announcing Chicago’s award recipients in the Big Apple seems a little, well, weird, that’s because it’s a major change of practice for the decades-old guide. As recently as last year, Michelin’s Chicago honorees were announced in the spring at a local celebration. This year, the organization instead announced the Windy City’s star and Bib recipients in a joint ceremony recognizing restaurants in Chicago, New York, and Washington D.C. While Michelin is regarded for its commitment to tradition, the guide has shaken up its announcement strategy in recent years, creating a cycle of constant hype and news through rolling announcements, teasers, and large, star-studded ceremonies.
