Queen Mary of Denmark Chose a Snow White Dress by Soeren Le Schmidt for the Danish Coronation

On January 14, 2024, Crown Princess Mary left Frederik VIII’s Palace in a motorcade to Christiansborg Palace. Through her car window, she smiled to the crowd in a snow white dress, its impeccable tailoring visible through the glass pane. At just after 2 p.m. local time, she was crowned Queen consort alongside her husband, the new King Frederik of Denmark. It was a historic moment, for which she wore a historic outfit by the Danish designer Soeren Le Schmidt. “Beyond grateful,” he wrote on Instagram. “Thank you for choosing me.”

The new Queen has long been a fan of the Danish designer: this past May, she wore a design by Le Schmidt to the coronation of King Charles III. He’s known for his classic tailoring as well as his use of dip-dyed satin silk—designs that have attracted a cohort of stylish, fashionable women. (For his spring 2024 show, former Danish prime minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt even walked the runway.)

His dress for Queen Consort Mary was thoroughly regal, yet modern. With long sleeves and a cowl neck, it felt traditional enough for the occasion–yet with a belted skirt with a silver buckle, the design had just enough flair, too. Even more dynamic? The white sash thrown over her shoulder—a high fashion take, it seems, on the royal accessory that grace so many formal outfits.

The choice of white, too, is a significant: not only is it part of the Danish flag, but symbolizes integrity and morality. 

As she smiled and waved to the crowd on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace, the new Queen seemed at ease in Le Schmidt’s creation, greeting the estimated crowds of 100,000 people that had gathered in the Copenhagen streets—many holding the Danish flag. It was an exemplary instance of confidence expressed through clothing.
