I Want What They Have: Jacob Elordi and Olivia Jade Giannulli

Love is a many-splendored thing, especially when you’re gawking at it from the outside. In this column, we’ll be examining the celebrity couples that give us hope for our own romantic futures and trying to learn what we can from their well-documented bonds.

Young love! It’s beautiful, it’s inspiring, and most of the time (in modern, celebrity-addled pop culture, anyway), it’s way too in-your-face. Not so for Elvis and Saltburn star Jacob Elordi and his on-again-off-again girlfriend Olivia Jade Giannulli, however, who started their relationship with the classic move of “stepping out for coffee in Silver Lake” in 2021. (Side note: Why are famous people always described as “stepping out”? Is it just called “getting coffee” when I do it?) While that first blush of romance seemed to fizzle soon after, the pair was spotted walking their dogs together in 2022, and we all know what that means.

Elordi and Giannulli were on-again enough to go on vacation to Italy in June, and flouted recent breakup rumors at the Saturday Night Live afterparty last weekend (where they were, in Page Six’s inimitable parlance, “all over each other”). In general, though, Elordi and Giannulli are actually pretty tame and chill for a double-celebrity pair; I don’t know how to communicate the magnitude of this, but the two literally don’t have any photos together on Getty Images. For a couple of extremely famous young Gen-Z people, this is basically the equivalent of John Lennon and Yoko Ono retreating to the seclusion of their bed.

I can absolutely see the appeal of Elordi, but my interest in him is removed and passive, while the lust he seems to inspire in women closer to his age is genuinely feral: I recently asked the teenage daughter of a friend who saw Saltburn a whopping three times what she liked so much about Elordi, and she responded by screaming: “EVERYTHING!” It is true that he’s very tall, he seems sweet, and that’s really all that’s required from celebrity hearthrobs a lot of the time.

For her part, Giannulli, the daughter of Lori Loughlin and Mossimo Giannulli, is in a somewhat complex nepo-baby situation given her parents’ role in the 2019 college admissions scandal. Jokes aside, that wouldn’t be easy for anyone, and I genuinely hope Elordi is obeying the cardinal relationship rule of “never badmouth your partner’s parents, even if you have ample reason to.” That’s what makes a true hunk, after all—not the height!
