Life Update: Since writing my Money Diary, my financial situation has changed a lot! I quit my job a few months ago and have started my own company. I pay myself $60,000 a year. It’s a lot of stress, a lot of working on weekends, a lot of being pushed out of my comfort zone, and a lot of faking it. But it’s also a lot of fun and a lot of meeting the coolest, most inspirational people.
I randomly got a job offer the other day from a company working on ocean conservation, which was my biggest obsession as a child. I’m still torn between building my own company and working on my number one passion, but either way, the offer reaffirms that there are too many interesting problems out there to be working on something I’m not passionate about! I feel so privileged to be able to make that choice.
There were many comments alluding to my shopping addiction, and I reflected on each and every one of them. One motivating factor for me to quit my job was so that I would be forced to face more than a decade of lifestyle inflation. When I audited my monthly costs, I was shocked! I desperately needed to trim the fat from my spending and get my life together. I don’t need $500,000 to survive and, frankly, I lived very happily back when I was on a grad student’s stipend. Those are the roots I want to find again.
I also moved out of my rent-controlled apartment into a six-bedroom, two-and-half-bathroom house in San Francisco with six other roommates, and I adore them so much. My rent increased to $1,550, but I mostly keep my total monthly spending (including rent and NYC mortgage) to around $4,000 after business expenses.
