Earth Day Marks 10 Years Since Drone Delivery Epiphany That Debuts This Year

Arrive CEO celebrates long-awaited autonomous delivery plan to help the environment

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – (April 18, 2024) – Earth Day is celebrated each year on April 22, reminding us that we must take action to better care for the planet. One inventor is now on the cusp of unveiling a revolutionary item that will change how packages are delivered. He had the epiphany that led to the idea 10 years ago around Earth Day.

“When you look at the statistics regarding the delivery field, it is clear that we need change,” says Arrive CEO Dan O’Toole. “I’ve spent the last decade working on that change, and it will be incredibly effective and good for the environment.”

O’Toole had the idea of a drone delivery system a decade ago and has spent the years since with the vision evolving into what it is today. Which now includes automation of all kinds, such as robotic delivery that could revolutionize the healthcare industry. He has created a smart mailbox that is more environmentally friendly and improves delivery safety and efficiency. The system offers a win-win for companies and consumers alike, ensuring that packages reach their intended destination without being stolen, and helps companies save money in the process.

According to Pitney Bowes, a company known for its postage meters, nearly 22 billion parcels were delivered in 2023. That represents a 5% increase over the prior year. Every second, 687 parcels are generated, with an average of 165 parcels shipped per household.

The many shipped parcels have numerous issues, starting with their environmental impact. The current way that packages are shipped focuses on using airplanes and delivery trucks, which create a lot of environmental pollution and typically use fossil fuels. Replacing some of these with final-mile drone delivery can help with the green movement by reducing greenhouse gasses, using less fuel, and making the roads safer. Plus, porch pirates cannot get into the smart mailboxes to steal the packages, which helps save companies from shipping out replacement products.

Arrive’s smart mailbox is slated to debut in 2024, offering the country a way to make parcel delivery more environmentally friendly, safer, and secure. It checks off the boxes of all that people need and are looking for in getting packages delivered, whether at home or for the office. Consumers can integrate their smart mailboxes with other smart devices in their homes, including locks and security devices. The mailboxes will be able to maintain an ideal temperature so that items are not compromised. This will significantly help those getting prescription medication deliveries.

“For the last 10 years, I have been working diligently on this and can’t wait to bring it to the world,” O’Toole adds. “It’s going to change the way delivery takes place, and all for the good.”

Here are tips for consumers to get started helping to make delivery more environmentally friendly:

·         Aim to combine delivery items to reduce the number of packages and trips to the home. For example, those who order from Amazon can order everything one day a month or a week, rather than several times per week, as they think about something they need.

·         When receiving packages, try to ensure that you have a secure way to obtain them so they are not at risk of being stolen. Those who will be home can watch for them; if they won’t, they can ask a neighbor to watch for them and grab them when they arrive.

·         Once you receive packages, be sure to reuse and recycle all the materials that can be reused and recycled. This will keep the process going and keep the items out of the landfill.

·         Carefully examine options, sizing charts, etc., to reduce the number of items being returned. Whenever possible, opt for returns that don’t require packaging, and choose a nearby drop-off site for the item so it is sent back in bulk.

·         Choose an environmentally friendly final-mile delivery option whenever possible. As the drone delivery field continues to emerge, more options will soon be available.

Arrive is using patented technology for their smart mailboxes. The technology will allow packages to be delivered in a manner that is securely protected from porch pirates and the weather. Deliveries are put into the weatherproof box via drone; nobody besides the rightful owner can access it. Arrive’s smart mailboxes enhance public safety by aiding emergency services in locating homes that have placed 9-1-1 calls. These mailboxes illuminate and visually guide emergency vehicles, reducing response time and potentially saving lives. This feature has earned support from first responders, recognizing its potential to streamline emergency responses. The smart mailboxes support traditional and autonomous delivery.

Arrive’s smart Mailbox-as-a-Service (Maas) platform helps businesses and residents send and receive packages securely and safely. The company has announced several new partnerships across its MaaS (Mailbox as a Service) ecosystem, Hush AerospaceHEI Integrated SystemsJoule CasenVIAsoft Corporation and A2Z Drone Delivery. Arrive has been granted patents for their revolutionary drone docking station and delivery system, and they have filed three other patents.
