BlendJet recalling 4.8M portable blenders following reports of malfunctions leading to injuries

About 4.8 million BlendJet portable blenders have been recalled after reports that the product overheats and may catch fire, as well as having blades break off, which has resulted in injuries.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the recall involves BlendJet 2 Portable Blenders. The commission advises customers to immediately stop using the product and to contact the company for a free replacement.

There have been 329 reports of the blender’s blades breaking while in use and 17 reports of the device overheating or catching on fire, causing property damage of roughly $150,000, CPSC said. 

The Benicia, Calif., company has heard of 49 people having minor burns and one laceration injury due to the faulty product.

“While none of the reported incidents resulted in serious injury or significant property damage, out of an abundance of caution, our company updated the base of the BlendJet 2 to feature thicker blades and an improved electrical configuration,” BlendJet said in a statement. “These updates were incorporated many months ago into all BlendJet 2 devices manufactured by the company.”

Consumer Reports said it began raising safety concerns in August after seeing complaints that the blender was smoking while plugged in. The company tested the blender and recommended that CPSC investigate the safety of the product after the blade “broke off completely.”

The recall also applies to about 117,000 devices sold in Canada, CPSC said.

The products in question were sold at Costco, Walmart, Target and other retailers nationwide from October 2020 to last month.
